Original Scalera Films Italian 55x56 poster for the Paramount PIctures movie THE CAT AND THE CANARY (1939) starring Bob Hope, Paulette Goddard, John Beal, Gale Sondergaard, Elizabeth Patterson, George Zucco, Milton Kibbee, Charles Lane, Chief Thundercloud, Nick Thompson and George Regas. The film was directed by Elliott Nugent. The Italian title is IL FANTASMA DE MEZZANOTTE, which translates as "The Ghost of Midnight". The film was not released in Italy until 1946, after the end of World War II. The war, of course, had prevented the release of American films in Italy during the conflict and, in some cases, the period immediately before. The movie was a remake of the 1927 film, which in turn had been adapted from a play of the same name. The comic ghost story takes place in Louisiana. Lots of southern gothic haunted mansion! It was enormously popular, so popular in fact that Paramount re-teamed the two stars in THE GHOST BREAKERS (1940), another film remade from a silent picture. This movie is regarded as one of the best of the Bob Hope films. This is a large format poster, almost square in shape, with dramatic art by Dante Manno. Because it is large, we have had to photograph the poster from above. Condition is quite good, but this poster was used in a cinema in Italy and should be regarded as used.
