RKO Original Italian 79x55 Poster for the Victor Fleming biography film JOAN OF ARC (1948) starring Ingrid Bergman, Jose Ferrer, Francis L. Sullivan, Ward Bond, Gene Lockhart, Leif Erickson and Cecil Kellaway. This fascinating war drama takes place in the 15th century during the Hundred Years War between France and England. Joan of Arc is a maid who leads her country in a time of war. But her religious visions are denounced and she is put on trial, condemned as a witch, and burned at the stake. Bergman was totally immersed in her role and absolutely radiates "purity." Unfortunately, just as the film went into general release, a scandal broke about what was then considered an illicit affair with Italian director Roberto Rosselini. Bergman, who had been idolized by the American filmgoing public, was suddenly anathema. She left Hollywood and her American film career, but the unwanted publicity caused the film to tank at the box office. Nevertheless, JOAN OF ARC was a critical success. The movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including a Best Actress nomination for Bergman. The film won the Oscars for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design.
